The Grammar of Olana: Talking Cyanotypes with David Sokosh

Join Hudson Valley artist David Sokosh for an illustrated discussion on his “Olana Project” which uses cyanotype to capture the architecture, landscape, objects, and history at Frederic Church’s designed home and landscape. Learn how the contemporary artist engaged with objects in the historic house that are often overlooked, how important photography was to Frederic Church, and more about the Churches as travelers and collectors. During this presentation, Sokosh will share examples of collage prints and a newly printed zine. Three examples of his large format Cyanotype collage prints from his most recent project will also be on view at Hudson’s Amtrak station beginning on November 12th. David Sokosh is a Photographer, Filmmaker and Book Artist, based in New York’s Hudson Valley. He shoots on B&W film and creates photographic prints using the 19th Century process of Cyanotype. His work is deeply rooted in American material culture. The images he creates bring great objects and ideas from the past into the present, telling their stories through writing, still and motion picture photography. His work honors vintage objects and technologies while making both accessible to present-day audiences.
