Making Natural Dyes with Local Plants

**This workshop is sold out. Please email education@olana.org if you would like to be added to our waitlist.**

Saturday, April 29, 1-3pm

Olana’s Hudson Valley landscape is brimming with natural dye potential. Identifying local plants for their natural dye properties opens a palette of wildcrafted and foraged color and deepens our relationship to the land. In this introductory natural dye workshop, participants will work with local plant dyes that produce beautiful color on biodegradable fibers like cotton, linen, hemp, silk, and wool.

During this special Arbor Day workshop, artist Katrina Rodabaugh will guide attendees in creating  several hues of natural dye using various fibers and mordants. In honor of Arbor Day, this workshop will focus on dyes produced from local trees like black walnut, oak, maple, sumac, or pine. This program is best suited for beginners curious about using local plants and for intermediate dyers who want to deepen their practice. Participants will leave with dyed fiber samples, a pamphlet with resources and step-by-step instructions, and the confidence to continue this work.

Katrina Rodabaugh is an artist, writer, and teacher working across disciplines to explore environmental and social issues through craft techniques. Mostly, she rethinks the relationship between fiber art, sustainability, and fashion. She’s the author of three books including Make Thrift Mend (2021) and Mending Matters (2018). Her writing and artwork have appeared in the New York Times, Boston Globe, Martha Stewart Living, Selvedge Magazine, Sunset magazine, Taproot magazine, and more. She lives with her husband, two sons, thirteen chickens, honeybees, and many plants in the Hudson Valley of NY. Learn more about her work here.

Paint the Forested Landscape with Woodstock School of Art

Saturday, April 29, 1-3pm

**This workshop is sold out. Please email education@olana.org if you would like to be added to our waitlist.**

This workshop is led in partnership with Woodstock School of Art on occasion of Olana’s Arbor Day celebration and will provide participants with an opportunity to look closely and capture Olana’s landscape. Led by professional teaching artist Anne Crowley, this workshop will focus on perspective and landscape painting with oil pastels. Take in Olana’s forested landscape and explore how your own observations can be turned into a work of art. During the workshop, participants will be given time to explore their individual practice with the assistance of the instructor. Suitable for all levels, no experience necessary! Basic materials provided; participants encouraged to bring their own supplementary materials.

Anne Crowley was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1960. Her love of art was ignited by her grandfather Liam O’Rinn whose paintings lined the walls of their home and where he had his painting studio. Anne began her formal study of painting at Dunloghaire school of Art and earned a BFA at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, Ireland. After making her way to New York City in 1983, to study further, she earned a Masters in Fine Art from Hunter College in 1986. In 2000, she relocated from New York City to the Hudson Valley, finding the new surroundings visually compelling: the Catskill Mountains, the Ashokan Reservoir, deer, birds and flora. Her work has been shown throughout the Hudson Valley, New York City, and Pennsylvania.
